Do-re-mi-fa dys-en-ter-y! A musical adaptation of the computer game classic “The Oregon Trail” is in the works of the team behind “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile”.
In an interview with Collider, filmmakers Will Speck and Josh Gordon shared that they have collaborated with their Lyle, Lyle songwriting team Pasek and Paul (Benj Pasek and Justin Paul) to create a darkly comedic musical version of the video game crack .
Although no studio is currently affiliated, the group announced that they have acquired the rights to “The Oregon Trail.” The report states that the project is in “active development”.
“People are very protective of their intellectual property, as they should be,” Speck said. “These guys have been great partners so far, allowing us to take it and run with it. Also, we basically made them production partners.”
Speck and Gordon shared that Pasek and Paul came up with the idea of adapting The Oregon Trail after the directing duo stated they “really want to do another musical.” Given the morbid source material, the filmmakers also share that they are weighing whether the project should be developed for an R rating or aim for something less graphic.
“[The game] always had this dark humor because your chances of dying from anything from dysentery to a laceration were anything… basically any move you died from,” Gordon shared. “[We’re] going back a bit to our roots in comedy, combining it with the fun of making a big musical, and also just with the ambition to take that very seriously too and make a big historical expansion epic westward that also has it about dying of dysentery.
Speck and Gordon representatives were not immediately available for further comment.
First published in 1974, The Oregon Trail was designed as an educational computer game for students to learn about the circumstances of pioneer migration in the 19th century. The series has since spawned numerous sequels across different platforms over the years, with the most recent being released by Apple in 2021.
Pasek and Paul are one of the most established songwriting duos in entertainment. They have written music for “La La Land” and “The Greatest Showman” and two new songs for the film adaptation of their stage musical “Dear Evan Hansen.”
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile hits theaters on Friday.
