More than 20 people shot since Friday in Baltimore, Mayor weighs in on violence – CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – At least 22 people were shot in Baltimore on Friday alone.

WJZ investigator Mike Hellgren spoke to a man who heard gunshots shortly after 9:30 p.m. Monday on Parksley Avenue, one block from the Southwest District.

A 35-year-old woman was shot in the face. Police are searching for a white 2019 Acura TLX that fled the scene with part of the Maryland license plate “8EN”.

“I heard a car go by. I heard them going down the alley,” he told Hellgren, declining to give his full name. “No one is safe. I don’t care where you are or what neighborhood you are in. No one is safe – not even in the Harbor. ”

For weeks, WJZ has been talking to people asking leaders to do something to stop the bloodshed from affecting all parts of the city.

WJZ caught up with Mayor Brandon Scott on his views.

“We have to do as a city grows to the point where we don’t accept that people are going to settle simple, petty conflicts with gun violence, right? We have to get better as a city,” the mayor said Tuesday morning.

“This year, the police department made 322 gun seizures and seized more than 400 firearms on the street,” added Scott. “They erased more than 52% of their murders. We will continue to be aggressive, focusing on those people. . . . Our violence intervention officers have reconciled more than 400 conflicts that perhaps this year alone ended in violence.”

The mayor favors what he calls a holistic approach.

“There are young people, older people that we know are committing acts of violence because of stupid things,” he said. “And when will we as a community move forward? We cannot just rely on the police.”

For the man who heard those gunshots in Southwest Baltimore on Monday night, it wasn’t enough. “From his position, he should have a different perspective. He should do something about it instead of talking about it. He’s talking about someone else doing the job. He needs to do the job. He is the mayor. “

At least 20 people have been murdered in Baltimore this month.

In Annapolis on Tuesday, a House committee considered a key bill in Governor Larry Hogan’s crime reduction package that addresses judicial accountability.

If passed, Maryland will publish average sentences, length of sentence suspension and other sentences with guidelines.
