BALTIMORE (WJZ) – The infamous Mondawmin Mall Target is about to get a makeover.

Community leaders revealed on Tuesday that the vacant building that once housed the famous large canning shop has been purchased and will be used for community improvement.

blankThe 127,000 square foot building will be turned into a community center called the Touchpoint Empowerment Center.

“We will make sure that the citizens of this community have the resources they need to thrive,” said Calvin Butler, COO of Exelon.

Butler co-founded the nearby TouchPoint Baltimore community resource center in 2017.

The specifics of what the site will look like are still being worked out. Project leaders say decisions about its use will be based on community input.

The vision for this space now includes stores for local entrepreneurs to operate, a facility that offers community resources such as tutoring, mentoring, expanding workforce readiness programs, teaching kitchen and catering/event space.

“We really look forward to the rebirth of community space here in the larger Mondawmin community,” said Joe Jones, president and CEO of the Urban Family Center.

Urban Families are planning to work with Touchpoint to deliver workforce readiness programming.

Construction company CEO Whiting-Turner and Baltimore-born Tim Regan bought the space for $1 million but he says millions more could be invested to start transforming the area. around it.

“If you can break the isolation of an underserved neighborhood and have a real exchange of social capital inside-out and outside-in, you can really start to increase your opportunities for people in the community and actually encourages investment in the community. ,” said Regan.

Regan previously told WJZ that he “expects to see some light there in the next 10-12 months”.

Mondawmin Mall is one of the few shopping centers on the West side of the city where people can buy clothes, food and other goods.
