Mom’s urgent warning about popular toys as little daughter fights for her life

A Maine mother is sounding the alarm over a popular toy while her young daughter fights for her life in the pediatric intensive care unit.
Folichia Mitchell said her nine-month-old baby swallowed a water bead that grows when you put it in water.
That’s exactly what it did in the infant’s body.

“She hasn’t eaten in two days,” Mitchell said. “When we made it to Portland Hospital, she wasn’t off the stretcher before she started vomiting bile.”
The mother asks the manufacturer for a better warning label on the toy packaging.
“I’m scared every second right now,” Mitchell said.
The child swallowed one of the Ultimate Water Beads – about the size of a small pebble – made by Chuckle & Roar, a brand sold at Target.
The pearls vary in size and will grow when placed in water, with the product’s jumbo pearls measuring up to 1.3cm.
“The bead blocked her small intestine, causing it to swell so much that it entered her body and caused sepsis and infection,” Mitchell said.
“She had three surgeries this week. Her lungs fought, her heart fought and her kidneys fought.”
The box and instructions for the beads contain warnings of a possible choking hazard, but none warn of the possible consequences of what happens if they are ingested.
Mitchell wanted to sound the alarm about the product so other mothers wouldn’t experience her pain.
“Parents don’t have the opportunity to make an informed decision before buying because if I had seen that ‘toxic if ingested can cause constipation,’ I would never have bought them and brought them into my home,” he said you.
For now, all she can do is wait and pray for her daughter’s life.
“I just really hope that people will think positively of my daughter or pray for her to pull through,” Mitchell said.
Chuckle & Roar has not yet responded to a request for comment. Target says the company has spoken to Chuckle & Roar about the situation.
