Mom with MND speaks out after video of wedding dance with son goes viral

A wedding video that’s simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming has gone viral, with millions of people reaching for their tissues to see a son share a very special dance with his mother.
Kathy Poirer has Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and cannot walk, but with the help of her sons, she was able to share a special dance with their eldest, Zak, at his wedding.

It was a dream the Florida resident never thought possible.
“I just wanted this moment with my son,” Poirer told Sunrise.
“There are so many milestones in her life and one looks forward to them and I was afraid I wasn’t going to get that opportunity.
“It’s really an expression of a mother and her son and their love for each other.”
Poirer was diagnosed with MND more than three years ago and she has battled the diagnosis bravely and challenged the odds against her ever since.
“I prayed every day that I would last long enough to dance with him and I’m fighting for my life every day,” she said.

While the original video was filmed back in May, Poirer now advocates raising awareness about motor neuron disease.
“Most people think this is a genetic disease … (it) can happen to anyone and there is no known cause.”
The Brain Foundation says most cases of MND occur spontaneously, with only 10 percent thought to be hereditary.
In Australia, according to recent statistics, more than 2000 people are currently struggling with this disease.
“What I wanted to do was make people realize that this can happen in a blink of an eye and that you can just enjoy every moment to the fullest – you never know when it’s going to be taken away from you,” Kathy said.
The Bluey episode “Furz” will not air in the US.
