Mo Bamba was set to be the Chicago Bulls’ dark horse free agency target

Mo Bamba reportedly wants to play for the Chicago Bulls and they should prioritize trying to sign him early in free agency.

That Chicago Bulls made the playoffs for the first time in five years last season, but it didn’t result in a deep run. Rather, they were sent home by the Milwaukee Bucks in five games in the first round. That came after spending big bucks on top free agents like DeMar DeRozan and Lonzo Ball.

This offseason, the Bulls are linked with keeping Zach LaVine on a supermax contract. What else could the team do to improve their chances of finally making it back to the NBA Finals for the first time since the team of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman defeated the Utah Jazz in 1998?

Maybe they should look at a player who didn’t receive a qualifying offer from their current team. We’re talking about Mo Bamba.

Mo Bamba a free agency target for the Bulls

Bamba was the Orlando Magic’s sixth pick in 2018, one pick ahead of Chicago. For the first three seasons of his career, Bamba was a bench option for the team. It was last season with the team that he recorded significant minutes as a starter.

In 69 starts in 71 games, Bamba averaged 10.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 1.7 blocks in 25.7 minutes played while shooting 48.0 percent from the field. His average blocks per game is seventh best, alongside the San Antonio Spurs’ Jakob Poeltl and the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Evan Mobley.

Joe Cowley from the Chicago Sun Times dropped an interesting nugget on Thursday, June 30 that “if it were up to” Bamba, he would be playing for the Bulls “tonight”. However, he cautioned that “at its current value, the sentiment is not mutual.”

Thing is, considering Bamba is a top 6 draft pick, he’s bound to generate interest. He’s already connected to Teams like the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers.

Bamba could be a real low-risk, high-reward chant for the bulls if they can agree a deal with him. Mo Bamba was set to be the Chicago Bulls’ dark horse free agency target
