MLB insiders predict Carlos Correa’s homecoming sooner than expected

Carlos Correa left the Houston Astros for the Minnesota Twins this offseason, but an opt-out in his deal could allow him to leave sooner than some think.

Correa signed a three-year deal with the twins but the deal goes a little deeper. The star shortstop is only tied to Minnesota for the upcoming season. Technically, he signed off after his freshman and sophomore years with the Twins.

Basically, the Twins’ front office has signed on for a constant state of panic.

While it’s still a smart move since Correa will be a force in Minnesota, it means he could leave at any convenient time (well, any offseason).

The Athletic’s Jim Bowden predicted this very real possibility in his latest column:

“Carlos Correa is enjoying his one-season season in Minnesota but missed out on the big stage in October, resigning from his contract and returning to the Astros to the delight of his former teammates.”

Ouch. That would hurt far and wide in the Midwest.

Gemini: Could Carlos Correa Return to Houston Astros?

Correa still has connections in Houston. His teammates love and respect him, and owner Jim Crane tried his best to convince Correa to return on an affordable deal. Unfortunately for Crane, the twins offered more at the last minute.

A return of Correa likely depends on the success of his successor, which the Astros have been hyping all spring.

Jeremy Peña won the starting shortstop gig a little earlier than expected, and as a young potential star in the making, he could give the Astros an inexpensive Correa replacement. While unlikely to live up to Correa’s standards, Crane and Houston would have to make a difficult decision if he can even partially fill those boots.

On Sunday, Peña hit .412 while hitting two home runs and recording 8 RBI with a 1.268 OPS in seven spring practice games. Spring training is just that – training – but we shouldn’t completely discount the fact that the Astros’ scouting department is one of the best in baseball.

Only time will tell if Correa returns. The twins should enjoy him while they can. MLB insiders predict Carlos Correa’s homecoming sooner than expected
