The 2022 MLB extra innings rule takes player safety into account, but not all fans like it. However, it will likely speed up the pace of the game.
As the season begins, the Red Sox Yankees are already testing the extra innings rule to start the 2022 season.
According to FanSided’s Miranda Remaklus, this is the MLB rule for extra innings in 2022:
“To protect the health and safety of players, the league has agreed to retain the rule that each additional inning begins with a runner in second place. The batsman or substitute leading the inning is the next batsman in the lineup. The runner in second place is the last hitter from the team’s previous half-inning.
Any runner or batter previously removed from play is not eligible to return to play in this situation.
For purposes of calculating runs, the runner starting the inning on second base is deemed to have reached second base due to a field fault, but a fault will not be awarded to the opposing team.”

The rule is the same as 2021. While some might not like the ghost runner situation, it’s doing a good job of reducing game length, which is necessary for MLB to attract new fans.
It will take time, but eventually we will get used to it.
