Missing boy found dead in Yerrabi pond in Canberra

An eight-year-old boy was found dead in a pond in Canberra a day after the bodies of his mother and brother were pulled from the same pond.

The eight-year-old’s body was found Sunday morning by police searching Yerrabi Pond and surrounding bushland in Gungahlin, north Canberra.

The boy was previously reported missing after the bodies of his mother and brother were found on Saturday.

Officials found the bodies after a member of the public saw them in the water. Investigators later secured a vehicle in a nearby parking lot.

Divers searched the pond on Saturday while other officers combed the surrounding bushland.

Detective Superintendent Hall O’Meagher said it was a tragic situation for all involved.

“Our thoughts go out to (the family of the deceased) and also to the responsive police who have had to deal with this tragic circumstance,” he said Saturday.

Investigations into the deaths are ongoing.

“At this time, police do not believe any other party was involved,” ACT Police said in a statement.

Yerrabi Pond is a popular resort town in north Canberra. It features a playground, hiking and biking trails, and a skate park.

A report for the coroner is being prepared.
