Irish golfer Rory McIlroy admitted his loss at the PGA Championship last week was one that “escaped” and “missed the cut” while his great drought continues. McIlroy held a one-shot after opening a five-under par 65 at Southern Hills. Justin Thomas eventually defeated Will Zatoris in a playoff after they ended up tying at five under.

McIlroy, the four-time Major winner, was also outmatched after the first five holes of the final round, bogeying the sixth and then making 10 straight pars before dropping a shot on the 17th, a rideable par 4. “Remorse? Yes, I regret that I didn’t take advantage of the favorable conditions on Friday afternoon.” said McIlroy. His last win was the 2104 US PGA. “I regret the big numbers I made on the par threes on Saturday. The fact that I only had to play the last 13 holes at one-under-par to get into the play-off on Sunday.”

“Completely different story”

McIlroy said of his loss: “So yeah, I definitely have a feeling it was one that got away. But again I have to take the positives and the fact that finishing 8th in a Major is absolutely the worst thing I could have finished last week. That’s a complete story of where I’ve been for the past few years.”

“In the first two majors last year, I missed the cut in Augusta and finished at 50th at the PGA. I have to be as patient as possible. I know that as I continue to play golf, opportunities will come and I will give myself a few more opportunities this year, not just to win majors, but to win golf tournaments in general.

McIlroy didn’t speak to reporters after the third or fourth round of Southern Hills. Paige Spiranac spoke about this behavior on her podcast Playing-A-Round. He will return to action in next week’s Memorial Tournament before defending his title at the RBC Canadian Open ahead of the US Open.
