Minnesota man charged with fraud after raising nearly $80,000 after burning property, destroying his property and blaming Black Lives Matter

A Minneapolis man has been charged by federal authorities after falsely accusing Black Lives Matter and Antifa of vandalizing his home and setting fire to his trailer.

Denis Vladmirovich Molla told police at Brooklyn Center he saw three figures running out of his yard before the fire. In addition, he reported that his garage door was vandalized with spray-painted graffiti reading “Biden 2020,” “BLM,” and an Antifa symbol.

Molla said he believes he was targeted for putting a Trump 2020 flag on the RV. He told reporters he had been arguing about his political views at his workplace a week before the incident.

“It just shocked me,” Molla told WCCO hours after the incident. “This shouldn’t happen, especially not because of any beliefs.”

But federal and local authorities said Molla, 29, set fire to his RV and spray-painted his own garage. According to court documents, Molla filed $300,000 in insurance claims to cover damage to his garage, RV, vehicles and residence because of the fire. He received $61,000 from the insurance company after threatening legal action and received more than $17,000 in GoFundMe donations.

Molla’s two GoFundMe accounts, which had been active for two years, were shut down and he was charged with two counts of wire fraud. He was released without bail on a promise to appear in court. He made his first appearance in US District Court on July 12. Molla could serve up to 20 years in prison for just one of the wire fraud charges, reports show.

First responders reportedly arrived at the Molla home in Brooklyn Center just after 3 a.m. on September 23, 2020. The man and his wife told reporters they were sleeping inside with their infant and toddler when someone set the RV on fire. He said the fire spread from the RV, burning down the garage, destroying three vehicles and damaging the home. First responders reportedly rescued three dogs and four puppies from the home.

“Our family is safe. That’s the main thing,” he told reporters hours after the incident. “It’s all material. It’s all material. It’s not as important as our family.”

Molla’s story spread across social media and conservative platforms.

“This is a message being sent from the far left, and I think people are starting to see that arson, looting and even murder – none of that is off the table,” Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham said at the time.
