Miles Mikolas shows flashes of dominance, reasons for optimism in Cardinals win – The Athletic

MILWAUKEE — Miles Mikolas leaned back in his seat, bagel in hand, and smiled. The rising sun had begun to light up the parking lot in front of Bagel Boyz, a popular breakfast spot near the Cardinals’ spring training facility in Jupiter, Florida. Mikolas had just taken three of his four children to school and was having some free time before a scheduled bullpen session at a training facility down the road.

Despite the fact that baseball’s suspension hadn’t yet been lifted, Mikolas was optimistic. He came out of the off-season feeling the best he had in years. He would play an integral role in the Cardinals’ starting rotation, a role that would not involve restrictions, pitch counts, or ongoing injury worries. Most importantly, he was able to put on sunscreen again.

“It had gotten that bad for me,” said Mikolas, looking back on last season, when he spent most of the summer on the injury list with tension in his forearm. “I couldn’t put sunscreen on the next day after the throw. My forearm would hurt so much.”

Two months later, Mikolas took the mound at American Family Field and promptly produced an outing similar to what he regularly showed in 2018 and 2019. On Friday night, the right-hander threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing for a run at three hits and a walk while you hit seven as the Cardinals beat Milwaukee 10-1. The start was a turnaround from a week ago when he needed 41 pitches to escape the first inning.

But disparity in results notwithstanding, Mikolas still feels good about where he is and where he can go from here.

“I felt pretty good at the first start,” said Mikolas after Friday’s outing. “Some of the things were just a hair off.
