On Wednesday morning, San Francisco Giants assistant coach Antoan Richardson met with San Diego Padres assistant Mike Shildt to discuss comments Shildt allegedly made in Richardson’s direction Tuesday night.
According to Richardson, Shildt made comments with “racist overtones” on Tuesday.
During their meeting on Wednesday, Richardson and Shildt were apparently able to share their thoughts on what happened and they were able to have a productive conversation about the situation.
After the coaches’ meeting, Richardson and Shildt met with a group of reporters to clarify what was going on and explain the situation.

“And after we kind of chatted, just to make it perfectly clear that I don’t believe in any way that Shildty is a racist,” Richardson told media outlets while standing next to Shildt on Wednesday morning.
Richardson went on to state that he intended to raise awareness of how words can have an impact that may not come close to what was intended.
“I just wanted to draw attention to how words affect certain communities, even though they may not have ill intent,” Richardson explained. “It just helped us become more aware of what those things mean.”
When Shildt had a chance to speak, he thanked Richardson for his help in clarifying the situation, then acknowledged how he used “inappropriate language” on Tuesday.
“I don’t know Antoan’s origin,” said Shildt. “I can’t walk in his shoes. I can only have empathy and love that I have and have always had in my life. I used inappropriate language which was my biggest problem last night and I apologize for that.”
