Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) is said to want to find out why the NBA veteran Enes Freedom was given up by the Houston Rockets, just minutes after he was acquired through a transaction last week.
Freedom, an outspoken, anti-China center, was moved to Houston by the Boston Celtics before the trade deadline.
His tenure with the organization finished after 10 minutes.
Heavy report that league insiders expressed doubt that the player would have another contract in the NBA:
Freedom now seems to be highlighting uncertainty about whether he will get another NBA job by the fact he has been outspoken about a number of social issues. He has responded to comments from conservative lawmakers, who say he is being punished for his anti-government stance in China.
Another team’s GM said: “I don’t know if anyone else signed him. Maybe not. I think from a basketball standpoint, it really matters. I’m not sure if anything else would come into play. I don’t think he won’t get a job for whatever he says or does. I think he’s not defensive, and the game is changing. He plays a lot older than he really is.”
Freedom canceled on CPAC on Monday, but is said to have attended lunch with GOP senators a day later.
According to the senators in this room, the former first-round draft player spoke to the senators about China’s growing influence over the NBA and how other players and staff members spoke out against the lake. China’s human rights record faces blacklist.
Lee told the outlet he wanted to know why the Rockets gave up Freedom.
“I would love an explanation from the NBA, I really want,” the senator said. “I think a lot of people would love an explanation from them.”
Other Republican senators over lunch praised Freedom for speaking out for democracy internationally.
