The honor of singing the national anthem at this year’s Super Bowl was given to country singer-songwriters Mickey Guytonand she delivered a performance beyond the hype.
Guyton has been featured in many recent entries media profiles that highlights her struggle to break into the world of country music as a Black female artist, as well as her Grammy-nominated hit, “Black like me“Which she dedicated to the memories of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floydand Breonna Taylor.
“The Star-Spangled Banner,” with lyrics from 1814 Francis Scott Key The poem, is a notoriously difficult song, with lyrics that trip up even experienced performers, a vocal range wider than what most singers are comfortable with, and a famous high note in “land of freedom”.
Guyton comes across with flying colors. In a floor-length royal blue evening gown as elegant as her performance, she delivered a stunning performance – including nailing the high note at the end – and couldn’t didn’t smile as she finished the song and military planes flew over the stadium.
