Michael Jerome Irvin is a name to be reckoned with in the NFL world. Now working as a sports commentator, the former professional wide receiver has made a name for himself at the highest level. He spent his entire 12-year NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys.
His career could have lasted much longer, but then a spinal cord injury forced him to say goodbye to the game. Irvin was nicknamed “the playmaker” due to his amazing ability to make big plays in crucial games throughout his career.
“It’s the nature of the game now”: Michael Irvin on Davante Adams & Tyreek Hill making the big bucks
Hall of Famer Michael Irvin recently spoke about the gigantic contracts Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill landed this offseason. He said he wasn’t jealous of the two and admitted the nature of the game was such that those contracts actually made sense.
“That’s the nature of this game. The salary cap is now over $200 million. When I was playing it was $60-80 million, so the money in the league has grown exponentially. No, I’m not jealous of it. I am pleased‘ he claimed, as reported by the New York Post.
He also commented on Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams leaving their star QBs to join new franchises. “You left Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes – I don’t know if I could ever have left Troy Aikman‘ Irvin claimed. When asked if the factors associated with living in Las Vegas or Miami might have had an impact on the recipients’ decisions, Irvin immediately said no.
“You can still live in your house during the offseason, but I’m not leaving these quarterbacks alone,” he said. “Let’s see how that plays out. You earn $30 million and you can have houses in two locations. I think the most important thing is to take care of what’s on the football field,” he added.
Speaking about the new QBs Davante and Tyreek will be working with next season, Irvin said: “They had some great quarterbacks. I’m excited to see how it works with Tua Tagovailoa and Derek Carr.”
“If you don’t come up with the numbers to back that $30 million, they’re going to come after you, just like Dallas did with Amari Cooper and his $20 million. It would have been difficult for me to make a business decision to leave these quarterbacks‘ he continued. It will be interesting to see how the big names with big money fare in the coming season.
