Michael Chandler brings violence to the Octagon every time he fights.
Michael Chandler is on a quest to win the UFC Lightweight Championship or the best possible fight against the toughest names available. He takes another step towards both of those goals at UFC 274 when he faces Tony Ferguson.
“That’s what I asked for,” Chandler said during UFC 274 media day. “I’ve always dreamed of coming here and performing in the brightest light and they gave that to me. It’s exactly where I wanted to be.”
Since joining these bright lights in 2021, Chandler has hosted some of the most exciting fights in mixed martial arts. He’s 1-2 in the Octagon, with a win over Dan Hooker and loses to Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira. Despite riding the wave of those two losses into his fight against Ferguson, Chandler is determined to stay the course and push forward.
“I gave up on being perfect a long time ago,” Chandler said. “You go through a few losses and realize it’s all part of the process.”
The same process helped Chandler find much success during his run with Bellator, where he held that company’s lightweight title three times. Along the way he picked up wins against the likes of Eddie Alvarez, Benson Henderson and Marcin Held. That success hasn’t followed him to the UFC, but he remains one of the top fighters in the company.
“I’m Dana White’s favorite fighter,” Chandler said. “My ‘Dana White Privilege’ won’t make a difference no matter what.”
Tony Ferguson needs to win to silence the doubters
Ferguson is trying to recover from his own three-fight losing streak. This came after a 12-fight win streak that began in 2013. In that run alone, he defeated many of the UFC’s top names, including Donald Cerrone, Anthony Pettis, Kevin Lee and Rafael dos Anjos. He was a guy Chandler had his eye on for a long time.
“Tony Ferguson was at the head of the division at the time,” Chandler said. “He was considered one of the best lightweights in the world. He was the guy I wanted to fight from the start and now we can do it on Saturday night.
Even with Ferguson on that runner, Chandler sees him as a worthy opponent that he cannot take lightly.
“He’s probably going to be the most dangerous,” Chandler said. “What makes Tony so scary is that he’s so unpredictable that there’s no man alive who can help you prepare for him. That’s why everyone is going to sit on the edge of their chair and that’s why we’re going to steal the show from everyone.”
