A coach and former Olympic athlete in equestrian sport is on trial for shooting her student and her fiancé. Michael Barisone, 57 years old, has maintained the ability to defend himself. The opening statements are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET on Monday, March 28. You can watch it in the player above.
Barisone faces two counts of attempted murder and two counts of possession of a second-degree weapon with an unlawful purpose.
Authorities say he shot the student who rented the house Lauren Kanarek twice in the chest, and opened fire on her fiancé Rob Goodwin, but he failed. Barison tried to evict Kanarek from his ranch in Long Valley, New Jersey, believing the couple had threatened him. He even sued the policeclaimed that they failed to investigate when he called 911 three times and that they lied in his reports.
Certainly, the dislike between him and his students was mutual. In fact, Kanarek has voiced concern for her safety.
“I’m being bullied by a 6’3 man,” she wrote on Facebook before the shooting in a post that is currently unavailable, according to New York Times. “Being bullied to the point that I was scared. It’s very complicated – I’m not sure what I can say here – but it seems Safe Sport was made for exactly this reason. ”
SafeSport brought abuse allegations in US Olympic and Paralympic sports.
A judge dismissed Barisone’s suit.
“The courts have held that plaintiffs have no constitutional right to ask the police to investigate on their behalf, let alone do so to their satisfaction,” said Superior Court Judge. Louis Sceusi said, according to the Morris County store Daily record in November.
