Melbourne’s Chadstone Shopping Center announces major changes

After decades of offering free parking to customers, the Chadstone shopping center will soon start charging its customers.

Since it opened in 1960, customers have been able to park and shop for free all day in the popular center.

However, from May 2024, customers will be charged after the first two hours of shopping in some parking lots in the center.

The changes apply to more than a thousand parking spaces and new parking signs will be issued on the affected parking spaces.

But not everyone is happy with the changes.

“It all adds up… I think it’s awful,” a local told 7NEWS.

“We come here already spending a lot of money in stores… so it should be free,” added another.

Experts, on the other hand, consider the changes to be necessary.

“It would make sense for Chadstone to expand the paid parking situation across the board,” retail expert Gary Mortimer told 7NEWS.

“Especially during busy times like Christmas.”

The center has not yet announced how much the parking is expected to cost.

“Fashion Capital remains committed to providing visitors with free parking for the majority of our parking lots,” a spokesman for the mall told 7NEWS.
