Melbourne homeowner Tiffany Krylov shares the biggest mistakes she made when building her first home

A homeowner has uncovered the biggest mistakes she made when building her first home — including wasting money on carpets, opting for a double vanity, and failing to install outdoor outlets.
Melbourne resident Tiffany Krylov shared the ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ things she learned during the construction process that she wished she had known before designing her estate.

“You live and learn,” she said in a TikTok video, suggesting, “Learn from my mistakes.”
She said one of the “best investments” she’s ever made was spending the “extra money” on wood-look floors.
However, one of their biggest mistakes was wasting carpets on the bedrooms.
“My dogs destroyed the carpet,” she said.
Tiffany said that while she was pleased with the “high ceilings” in her home, she was “still upset” that she didn’t get taller doors to match.
“High ceilings give the illusion of more space and generally add value. Also good if you live with tall people,” she said.
In her bathroom, Tiffany said she made the “best” decision getting shower stalls, a corner in the wall to tuck toiletries in, but she wishes they were “bigger.”
Limited space
Bathroom space was also an issue for the homeowner.
“I wasted limited space on a double vanity instead of making my shower huge,” she said.
She said she didn’t fully tile her bathroom, so parts of her walls are now exposed to moisture.
Tiffany said she’s glad she installed lots of drawers in the kitchen — but regrets she didn’t get extra shelves in her walk-in pantry.
Allocated Storage Space
Another criticism was that she forgot to plan an allotted spot for her trash can, so it’s now hiding in her pantry.
For those looking for a place to store a microwave, Tiffany said she made sure to have an outlet installed in her pantry so her device could be well out of sight.
When designing her home, she said she was glad she asked the builders to leave her walk-in closet “empty” so she could have a custom closet “professionally installed” to maximize space.
‘Wrong thing’
Among other things, she failed to frost her front door window and have a circular air-conditioning system with exhaust ducts.
“The wrong thing I did was let them install the circular channels and not the square ones,” she said.
“The cheap (round) ones can’t change the direction of the air.”
Eventually, while installing many outlets throughout her home, she forgot to allocate them outside for outdoor devices.
Her video has been viewed more than 1.5 million times – with many acknowledging they made the same ownership mistakes as Tiffany.
“I also live in Melbourne and they rushed to build my house… And you’re on point with everything, especially the designated dumping ground,” one said.
‘Same errors’
Another said: “100 percent correct on all counts! I add: Not being able to get downlights from my builder thinking I could get it cheaper or better myself – WRONG!”
One suggested, “Holy shit, we basically made the same mistakes.”
While another added: “I was just building too. Basically the same right and wrong here too.”
