7NEWS understands that emergency services had to call in personnel to use cranes to separate some of the materials at the recycling plant as the flames grew to a height of 10m.
Residents in the Deer Park, Derrimut, Laverton North, Ravenhall, Sunshine West and Truganina areas are being warned they may see or smell smoke.
“If you are sensitive to smoke or live with someone who is sensitive to smoke, you should close windows and doors. Turn off heating and cooling systems,” Vic Emergency said.
Emergency services say there is no immediate threat to the community and no action is needed.
The fire is not classified as suspicious, but its origin is being investigated.
