Today, we have gathered here to honor the ravishing women in our mirror Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated who has spent the last 114 years serving looks, demonstrating excellence and reminding everyone that AKA’s business is serious.
This elite organization began as the vision of nine college students on the Howard University campus in 1908. Since then, the sorority has grown into a globally influential organization of nearly 300,000 members. College-trained staff, bound by sisterhood and empowered by a commitment to servant leadership both nationally and internationally within its scope.
As Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown, it has maintained its focus in two key areas: the personal and professional development of each member’s lifetime; and promotes its membership into an organization of respected power and influence that is at the forefront of effective advocacy and social change leading to equality and justice for all citizens of the world. gender.
Many iconic celebrities such as Maya Angelou, Phylicia Rashad and Toni Morrison represent the sorority of the class that continues to inspire generations of Black women around the world.
Last year, a particularly star-studded group of celebrities included Tracee Ellis Ross and Cynthia Erivo, basketball legend Lisa Leslie, journalist Robin Roberts, business executive Ursula M. Burns, costume designer Famed Ruth E. Carter, film producer Debra Martin Chase, and author Alice Walker of “The Color Purple” are nominated as honorary members.
“I am honored to welcome these extraordinary women into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,” said Alpha Kappa Alpha International President and CEO, Dr. Glenda Glover. “Each of these celebrities has reached the pinnacle of success in her respective fields and spheres of influence. They are recognized and celebrated around the world and are symbols of greatness.
“Since its founding in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha women have been history-makers and standard-bearers,” she continued. “Our newest members are writing a new chapter in our long and distinguished history. They now join an international sisterhood of more than 300,000 members who demonstrate excellence through our lifelong commitment to the communities we serve. The introduction of our newest honorary members will ensure that we continue to shine a light on the extraordinary achievements of Black women. ”
