Meek Mill is parting ways with Roc Nation Management

Meek Mill has left Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Management, the company that has overseen his career since 2012. While the rapper’s and the company’s representatives did not respond diversity‘s request for comment, he will no longer be featured on the Roc Nation website or their social media profiles. The news was first reported in Billboard.

The move is arguably complicated as Mill’s ties to the company run deep. He has a joint venture deal with the company for his Dreamchasers label and most importantly for the Reform Alliance – a non-profit organization he founded with Jay-Z to fight wrongful convictions in the United States. The latter was formed after Mill was sentenced to two to four years in prison for violating probation in a controversial verdict that was later overturned by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court after a high-profile campaign for his release, at which Rev. Al Sharpton, New England, Patriots owner Robert Kraft attended, and even Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney visits the rapper in prison. Jay-Z wrote an op-ed in The New York Times, saying, “What is happening to Meek Mill is just one example of how our criminal justice system jails and harasses hundreds of thousands of black people every day.”

In recent years, however, he has expressed frustration with his Atlantic Records label, despite his most recent album, Expensive Pain, charting at #3 on the Billboard 200.

“They didn’t put anything in expensive pain and then said I can’t drop another project for 9 months at the end of my contract after making them hundreds of millions… how would anyone survive that… most rappers can’t do that.” speak because they depend on these companies “I don’t,” he tweeted, also accusing the label of damaging his relationship with multi-platinum rapper Roddy Ricch. “I made 100 million records for Atlantic and let them rape me. But that label immediately separated us when the millions came from him.” Meek Mill is parting ways with Roc Nation Management
