McLaren had a tough showing in Austria where their driver Lando Norris was unable to drive the MCL36 the full distance of the first practice session. The young Brit’s power unit gave up during the session and from then on the entire Austrian weekend was a tough battle for the Woking team.

With the next Grand Prix still a few days away, McLaren is hoping Mercedes will salvage the PU, which failed as it was Lando’s third win of the season. McLaren is threatened with a penalty that they want to avoid at all costs.

Mercedes, as McLaren’s engine supplier, is doing everything in its power to resolve the issues with Lando’s third powerplant and when discussing the PU, Team Principal Andreas Seidl said: “The engine that failed on Lando’s side on Friday was a brand new one. It was his third.”

Analysis is still ongoing on Mercedes HPP side at the moment and hopefully they are able to salvage this engine and we will be in a better place again.”

Of course, it is not ideal that we have to resort to the old aggregates from the pool just because aggregates lose some of their performance with the mileage.”

But at the same time, it still allowed us to play the way we did [in Austria].”
