Maybe ‘aggressive’ on the Max Scherzer free agent front, but will it be enough?

The New York Mets are very interested in freehand pitching superstar Max Scherzer.

There are countless teams out there hoping they can top the Max Scherzer sweepstakes. After a brief stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Scherzer was indeed a fugitive out of free agency.

One club that is really interested in landing him is New York Mets. With Steve Cohen poised to spend big this season after missing out on the knockout stages, Scherzer is likely to land a big deal from the Mets. Will he go to Queens?

Free agency Max Scherzer continues to heat up

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Mets family wanted Scherzer, but they understood he might not be ready to move to New York. Scherzer may eventually stay in Los Angeles, but the Mets are poised to keep shooting.

As noted, Cohen and Co. know they have to go after other freelancers right now, too. According to Heyman, the Mets are also strongly considering fellow initiator Kevin Gausman as plan b. The signing of Gausman will also stimulate the fan base.

In the coming weeks, there are more and more reports linking New York with good players. Once again, after the team missed the play-offs in 2021, Cohen wants to put the club in the best possible situation for 2022 to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Signing Scherzer sends a monster statement to the rest of the NL, including the Atlanta Braves of course. Cohen would love to land Scherzer or Gausman. We should find out how things play out here for those two pitchers and the Mets in the near future. Maybe ‘aggressive’ on the Max Scherzer free agent front, but will it be enough?
