“Maybe a Deandre Ayton or a Zach LaVine” Jay Williams believes Mavericks will only become championship contenders after adding another Superstar alongside Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic is the current generation’s rising star and is on track to become the biggest deal in the NBA. Leading a team to the playoffs might be a task, but single-handedly carrying your team to the Conference Finals is something that’s rightfully called MVP-worthy. The Dallas Mavericks have been one of the biggest surprises out west this season.

They didn’t have it easy in the last two rounds of the playoffs, especially against the Phoenix Suns as they advanced in Game 7. The only problem with their current roster is the lack of veteran experience among the players. Just like the Suns needed a player like Chris Paul to mentor, it’s more or less a very similar situation.

The problem couldn’t be more obvious than it is now. The Golden State Warriors are arguably the most experienced team in the playoff race and the only team with as many champions. The Warriors have won three out of three games so far, putting the Mavericks in an extremely tight situation. After putting on a massive display of offensive firepower and sheer dominance on the court, they were considered with the highest odds of winning.

Luka Doncic has averaged 34 points per game along with 7.6 rebounds and 5 assists in this streak. But Stephen Curry and the Magic of Warriors was a very difficult enigma to decipher. Doncic became one of three players in NBA history to average at least 30 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists per game in the playoffs. But it seems his performances can only take Dallas as far as their current position, and questions are beginning to arise about their suitability.

Jay Williams advises the Mavericks to pair Luka Doncic with another star

As good as the team with Luka Doncic is, Jay Williams feels they are still missing a very important piece of the squad. “Winning an NBA championship, no. I think this team needs to move. I think they’re too protective sometimes. I want them to have a great opportunity to take advantage of.”

The analyst was open about who thought he fit the roster requirements. He mentioned that the Suns’ Deandre Ayton or the Chicago Bulls’ Zach LaVine would be a good match for the Slovenian baller. Keyshawn Johnson had also pointed out that almost every competing team has at least two-star players on their roster and that this would help the Mavs win the title.
