Red Bull driver and 2021 Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen was recently nominated for the prestigious title Laureus World Sports Award for Sportsman of the Year. This is an annual award that recognizes the achievements of individual men from the world of sport and is often referred to as the sporting equivalent of ‘Oscars’.

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen shared an epic rivalry during the 2021 Formula 1 season. The two drivers met several times and even had some dramatic arguments. Their rivalry reached a climax in the final race in Abu Dhabi, where Verstappen overtook Hamilton to claim his first world title after a controversial verdict.

His title rival Hamilton has been nominated for the award on seven separate occasions in 2009, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2021 and has won the award in 2020. Other Formula 1 drivers who have received the award are four-time champions Sebastian Vettel and 7-time world champion Michael sSchumacher.

Why is Max Verstappen nominated for the award?

Victory at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix made him the youngest driver ever and the first Dutch driver to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix. And with his 2021 title, he becomes the first Dutch driver to win the F1 World Championship.

In a short message, the Dutchman conveyed his greetings for the award ceremony. His video message read: “I am incredibly honored to have been selected as the nominee for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award. And I want to say a big thank you to all the media for voting for me.”

Verstappen started his 2016 season at Toro Rosso before being promoted to parent team Red Bull Racing. After signing a contract extension, he is said to remain with Red Bull at least until the end of the 2028 season. In his Formula 1 career he has achieved 20 wins, 13 pole positions and 60 podium finishes.
