According to prosecutors, Perna was in the building for about 20 minutes in the Senate Lobby. He was seen on video chanting to the crowd. Although he initially asserted that he had no intention of entering the building and was pushed inside by the mob, he later posted an eight-minute video on Facebook describing the actions he and his two friends had taken. my friend did that day.

“Steve and I, we went right into the Capitol building,” he said on video, according to the complaint.

He then added: “It’s not over yet, believe me.”

Perna has also made numerous Facebook posts indicating that he is a QAnon follower.

He was charged with the co-defendant Stephen Michael Ayres, who said police “escorted” them from one end of the Capitol building to the other. Ayres had also previously tried to blame the riots on “Antifa.” According to court documents, Ayres’ case is still pending.

Perna pleaded guilty in December all four charges against him. Unlike hundreds of other defendants who on January 6 agreed with prosecutors to plead guilty to one or more counts in exchange for other charges being dropped, Perna pleaded guilty to the very indictment that no plea agreement required.

According to a obituaryPerna died Friday “of a broken heart.”

Obituary does not specify cause of death, but pro-Trump website American Greatness report Perna hanged herself.

“His community (which he loved), his country and the justice system killed his spirit and passion for life,” the obituary said, blaming the death. of Perna to federal prosecutors.

The obituary describes Perna as a lover of music, frequent travelling, and caring for animals.

The obituary also emphasized that Perna’s presence at the Capitol on January 6 was peaceful and stated that he had been unfairly targeted.

“He attended the rally on January 6, 2021 to peacefully stand up for his beliefs. After learning that the FBI was looking for him, he immediately turned around. He entered the Capitol through a previously opened door (he did not break in as reported) where he was led out by police. He doesn’t break, touch or steal anything. He did not harm anyone, for he was in the velvet ropes for the photo-op. Because of this act, he was persecuted by many community members, friends, relatives and people who had never met him. Many people have silently supported and Matt is truly grateful to them. Hearings were repeatedly delayed and postponed for more than a year. Because of this, Matt’s heart breaks and his soul dies, and many are responsible for the pain he endured. Matt doesn’t have an obnoxious bone in his body. He embraces people of all races, income levels and beliefs, never berating anyone for having a different point of view.”

Prosecutors filed on 11 February to delay sentencing from a scheduled date of 3 March while the government conducts an “internal review” to try to “ensure that the defendants in a similar position on 6 January are treated in the same manner.”

Perna did not object to the request, according to the filing.
