“Steve and I, we went right into the Capitol building,” he said on video, according to the complaint.

He then added: “It’s not over yet, believe me.”

“His community (which he loved), his country and the justice system killed his spirit and passion for life,” the obituary said, blaming the death. of Perna to federal prosecutors.

The obituary describes Perna as a lover of music, frequent travelling, and caring for animals.

The obituary also emphasized that Perna’s presence at the Capitol on January 6 was peaceful and stated that he had been unfairly targeted.

“He attended the rally on January 6, 2021 to peacefully stand up for his beliefs. After learning that the FBI was looking for him, he immediately turned around. He entered the Capitol through a previously opened door (he did not break in as reported) where he was led out by police. He doesn’t break, touch or steal anything. He did not harm anyone, for he was in the velvet ropes for the photo-op. Because of this act, he was persecuted by many community members, friends, relatives and people who had never met him. Many people have silently supported and Matt is truly grateful to them. Hearings were repeatedly delayed and postponed for more than a year. Because of this, Matt’s heart breaks and his soul dies, and many are responsible for the pain he endured. Matt doesn’t have an obnoxious bone in his body. He embraces people of all races, income levels and beliefs, never berating anyone for having a different point of view.”

Prosecutors filed on 11 February to delay sentencing from a scheduled date of 3 March while the government conducts an “internal review” to try to “ensure that the defendants in a similar position on 6 January are treated in the same manner.”
