A teacher is accused of sexually abusing a student, according to deputies. Matthew Jonathan Hike33 years old, inappropriately touched the teenager and showed sexually explicit images, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said at a press statement Thursday.
He was a teacher at Livingstone Academy, a school for children with disabilities, delegates said. Hike also served as an assistant coach for the soccer team at Bloomingdale High School.
Hike has no students in his class but encounters the teenager in the hallway, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister speak.
“Livingstone Academy contacted HCSO after the grandmother of a teenage student reported that her grandchild was inappropriately groped by a teacher at the school,” the delegates said. “Through means of investigation, detectives have identified the suspect, Matthew Hike, 33. Detectives discovered that Hike had also shared a number of sexually explicit images with minors.”
Delegates asked anyone with information on any further victims to call the sheriff’s office at (813) 247-8200.
“The trusted adults who prey on our children and fall victim to them will have no place in our community,” Chronister said in a statement. “This suspect had no students in his class, but instead targeted minors in the hallways, gaining the victim’s trust and friendship before committing this horrific crime.”
Hike faces five counts of sexually harassing a victim between the ages of 12 and 15 and three counts of selling or distributing sexually explicit material to a minor. Records show he’s been released from prison. Lawyer Daniel Fernandez issued a guilty plea not on his behalf, court documents show.
