A Texas man is said to have gone to a job interview over the weekend while holding his girlfriend hostage. He was arrested twice.
Matthew Joseph Contreras25, accused According to police in El Paso, Texas, the attack was aggravated by a deadly weapon.
Court documents obtained by local ABC/CW affiliate KVIA note that the defendant and his alleged victim were romantically involved and had been living together for several years prior to the crime on Sunday, March 13, 2022. The couple also had 1 year old son together.
The woman told police she woke up around 2 a.m. on the day in question to find Contreras looking through her phone after she overslept when she got home from work. After regaining consciousness, she said, the defendant accused her of cheating on him based on a text message with a male colleague. The woman said that nothing happened between them; That’s when the attack begins.
Contreras allegedly punched his then-girlfriend several times on her body before holding a knife to her neck. He ended up cutting her hair with the same kitchen knife he allegedly raped her just minutes earlier. He then left the bedroom, the woman said, returning with a shotgun. Contreras is said to have put the barrel of his gun in her mouth and then brought it to her forehead. He then allegedly threw her to the floor and started kicking her. At one point, she said, the defendant laced with bleach on his alleged victim.
In the midst of this series of abuse allegations, the woman told police she insisted she was not cheating. But trying to argue with the defendant only made him angrier. As the alleged attacks continued, the victim became so desperate that she told her attacker, “Kill me.”
According to investigators, Contreras then forced the gun woman to accompany him to his job interview at the Otero County Detention Center across state lines in Alamagordo, New Mexico — away about an hour and a half. Their son sat in the back seat.
While driving, Contreras was run over and charged with speeding. Ticket agents did not contact the victim, investigators said, because the defendant told her to keep quiet.
When they arrived, Contreras entered the building himself and the woman was rescued after marking a detention officer in the parking lot. She told her story, and representatives from the Otero County Sheriff came to take her to a nearby medical center for treatment.
At the same time, delegates contacted the El Paso Police Department about the possibility of a kidnapping. An arrest warrant was issued and the defendant was arrested by the EPD on Monday, March 14, 2022.
According to El Paso Timesciting prison records, Contreras was booked into the El Paso County Jail but quickly applied for a $100,000 bail and was later released from custody.
But he was not detained for too long.
The newspaper said the defendant was released on Tuesday and then re-arrested by the FBI on Wednesday for possession of a weapon or ammunition of a prohibited person.
Contreras is currently held without a bond.
