Matt Canada says his offense doesn’t require mobile QB, keep calling Ben Roethlisberger One

If the whole offensive coordination fails, Matt Canada has a bright future as a stand-up comedian. Because the guy has jokes. During his regular press conference on Thursday, he spoke about QB’s mobility in his offense and went on to refer to Ben Roethlisberger as a mobile QB.

“I think we can work with whatever we have,” he told reporters via the group’s transcript. “Ben launched twice. We hit one in the apartment and pretty much hit the other, so I think we can do anything with whoever we have. Ben’s mobile. “

“Ben’s cell phone.” I’m reading those words over and over again to make sure they actually appear on paper. Roethlisberger is just the least mobile QB in football, 39 years old with the knees of someone twice his age. He could have done just enough in this offense, and Canada was of course right as Roethlisberger kicked off a couple of times against the Chargers. But mobile? Maybe Canada needs a definition of the word.

On the overall point and more importantly, it’s accurate to say Canadian offense can work with mobile and non-mobile midfield elements. That’s the conclusion of a study we did this summer that examined the mobility of all the pitchers he had in college. His 40-time QB average is just 4.84, and they’re averaging just 250 yards per season.

Research: Does Matt Canada’s Offense Require a Mobile QB?

“What this data shows is that Canada doesn’t need mobile QB. He’s coached and won with scramblers, he’s coached and won with passers. Obviously, there is a clear benefit to a more mobile midfielder and in this day and age most QBs need some degree of functional mobility, extending playtime, taking off when needed, but there’s no evidence it’s high on his list. ”

In college, he worked with sports quarterbacks like Northern Illinois’ Chandler Harnish while working with pocketers like Wisconsin’s Joel Stave and Pitt’s Nathan Peterman. He’s worked with all sorts, and while there’s no arguing a more mobile quarterback would open the door to Canadian offense, it doesn’t appear to be a requirement.

Still, Roethlisberger? He’s not moving like he used to be. Mason Rudolph looks like Carl Lewis next to Roethlisberger. You can’t plug face into shovel option and won the right to be called a “mobile device”. If Roethlisberger is mobile, then who is immobile? A factory?

But Canada is building a solid group of five for his next trip.
