Maryland was the first state in the country to remove the gas tax.

“I know for me, like, I pay five dollars [per gallon],” said Charles Jenkins, a West Baltimore resident. “I use my supercar so it would certainly be nice to have it cheaper.”

AAA reported that the average price of conventional gas in Maryland fell to about $3.96 a gallon on Saturday, down from $4.17 on Friday.

“For people who really depend on their cars, this tax measure is an amazing thing our governor has passed,” said Rebecca Hoffberger, a woman from Owings Mills.

The gas tax funds the state Transportation Trust Fund for transportation service and infrastructure needs. Lawmakers said they would supplement what was not collected with the state’s $7 billion surplus.

“We simply can’t help but let more Marylanders keep their extra hard-earned dollars in their pockets,” Hogan said.
