Marvel Studios is celebrating the spooky season with a new Halloween special called Disney Plus. Werewolf at night. The special focuses on Marvel Comics character Werewolf by Night, who is literally a werewolf, and will star Gael García Bernal in the title role.
At D23, Marvel Studios gave fans their first look at the “Special Presentation” coming to Disney Plus this October. The first trailer for Werewolf at night is black and white and exudes grindhouse film vibes. The special appears to be about a hunt, with the titular werewolf hiding among a group of supernatural hunters. (It also seems to draw some inspiration from the popular social deduction game Werewolf…)
Michael Giacchino, who is probably better known for his soundtrack writing skills than his directing talents, will direct the special. Starring alongside García Bernal in the Disney Plus Halloween special is actress Laura Donnelly (The Nevers, stranger), who will reportedly play monster slayer Elsa Bloodstone.
Werewolf at night will also bring another longstanding Marvel Comics supernatural character to the MCU: Man-Thing, the part human, part plant swamp monster that debuted in Marvel’s Wild Stories #1 in 1971.
García Bernal will apparently be playing the original version of the Werewolf by Night character, who – no giggles please – was named Jack Russell. In the Marvel Comics, Russell was from Transylvania and descended from a line of ancestors affected by lycanthropy. But the phrase “werewolf by night” predates the character of the same name by far; Marvel Comics’ predecessor, Atlas Comics, published a short story by that name in the pages of Marvel Tales in 1953.
Werewolf at night is coming to Disney Plus on October 7th.
