Marlins Arrests Avisail Garcia After Brewers Reject Eligibility Offer

The Marlins needed a replacement on the roster for Starling Marte, and they’ve got one from former Brewers quarterback Avisail Garcia.

Garcia was a legal contributor on the roster for a playoff team in brewers last season, for a lower price tag of .262 / .330 / .490, but that was not enough for Milwaukee to consider re-signing him or even making a qualified offer for him.

Instead, the Brewers lost Garcia for nothing, when he signed with the Miami Marlins on Sunday afternoon in a frantic attempt to do so by multiple freelancers before a potential layoff.

FanSided’s Robert Murray had initial reporting.

The Marlins lost to Starling Marte to the New York Mets earlier this week, which means they need a replacement. Garcia has the potential to do just that.

Marlins withdraw money on Avisail Garcia

The Marlins have awarded Garcia a four-year contract, according to Craig Mish.

Garcia and Marte are similar in age, and have similar potential in terms of running production, so it’s curious Miami’s decision to act on the latter’s request in lieu of the former.

However, expect the Marlins to make some moves to lead to a potential lockdown later this week. Miami is on the market for upgrades in several locations, and Garcia is just the beginning.

Given Garcia’s contract, which will pay him around $13.5 million per season, the Brewers’ decision not to give him a one-year qualifying offer is an interesting one. The Brewers’ offer would be over $18 million, but only for one season.

If Garcia declines and signs a contract elsewhere, the Brewers will receive a draft payout. However, without an offer of an extension, they would have lost Garcia with no regrets.
