Hello, and welcome to a fact that you may not have thought of in your entire life, but will now strike you every time you ever see a plumber jumping around in a Nintendo game.

While we all know that Mario wears a red shirt, hat, and blue jumpsuit, red has been a different color almost every time the character has appeared in his own series. That’s a nice and interesting thing to know, and you probably already knew this, but did you also know that Mario only wore it once in his entire career pure Red?

The wonderful Super Mario broth decided to take a sample of Mario’s hat/shirt color from a number of different games, find the hex color figure and compare them. If you’ve never had to use them before, Hex colors are when we give a color a numeric code to identify it when printing or using software like e.g. B. to identify exactlyshall we say, Photoshop.

What they found was quite surprising! Mario’s color palette has shifted from almost brown in previous games to darker, more maroon tones in 21st Century 3D titles, with one title in the middle of them all standing out: Super Mario 64which has the hexadecimal color code #FF0000, which means it’s pure red. As red as the color can get.

There’s something pleasantly awkward about the game that many longtime fans would consider the “purest” 3D Mario experience when such a literal display of that purity is displayed on Mario’s…hat.

Almost as interesting as this find, however, are some of the disclaimers the blog had to include underneath. Like the fact that “the colors of the NES games appear different on each device and in fact there is no standardized conversion of these colors to hex values” (I didn’t know that!), that Mario’s “pure” N64 colors in his don’t replicated other console appearances (such as mario party and smashed) and the Super Mario Odyssey The textures were so complicated that they couldn’t determine a single hex code for the color, they just had to put them all together to get an “approximation”.
