Mario Kart Tour Says So Long About Its Controversial Gacha Whistle

After three years, Nintendo is finally removing the controversial “gacha whistle” from its popular mobile racer. Mario Kart Tour. The whistles that players had to purchase in-game with “Rubies” for a chance at unlockable prizes will be replaced with a new in-game shop.

That official English Twitter account for Mario Kart Tour announced that gacha whistles will be removed from the game on October 5th. Mario Kart Tour will implement an in-game shop called Spotlight Shop where players can buy gliders, karts and drivers directly one by one instead of having to rely on luck.

Similar to Mario Kart correct, Mario Kart Tour lets you choose a driver, kart, and glider before going head-to-head (and pointing fingers) with players from around the world and Tokyo Drifting. However, if you wanted to unlock the game’s drivers – many of which were only available at certain times – you’d have to cough up a few rubies and “puff” on a green whistle in the hopes that they’d land a new driver, kart, or new one shoots glider.

Although the gacha whistle didn’t dish out duplicates, loud Chronicle of Video Games, Mario Kart Tour currently has 172 gliders, 193 playable characters and 246 karts. Considering that 10 Rupees cost $5.99 and whistle trains cost five Rupees, the chances of you getting the rare find you were hoping for were pretty slim unless you were willing to stretch your wallet to open. Only time will tell if the special prices for purchasing individual items in the Spotlight shop will break the bank for mobile players.

In addition to removing the gacha whistle, Mario Kart Tour will also add a new battle mode where players can test their skills against each other. But for now, people across the internet are showing mixed reactions to the news that mario kart tours virtual gambling will soon be a thing of the past.
