Mariners rub salt in Yankees’ wounds after being traded for Luis Castillo

The New York Yankees missed the Luis Castillo trade and the Seattle Mariners will look to rub salt in Brian Cashman’s wounds.
The Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners pulled off a blockbuster trade Friday night. The Reds sent Luis Castillo to the Mariners in exchange for four minor league prospects, including shortstop Noelvi Marte.
Missed Castillo were a variety of teams, including of course the New York Yankees. It had been rumored for weeks that the Bronx Bombers were after Castillo and all signs pointed to Brian Cashman finally getting his man.
But it shouldn’t be. According to Joel Sherman of the New York PostNew York’s reluctance to include shortstop prospect Anthony Volpe in a trade for Luis Castillo may have cost the Yankees a chance to land the Reds starter.
Mariners look to rub salt in Yankees’ wounds with Luis Castillo’s next start.
Luis Castillo last played for the Cincinnati Reds against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night. With Cincinnati using a six-man starting rotation, Castillo’s next start should be scheduled for next Tuesday.
Guess who the Seattle Mariners are playing Tuesday night? They’ve got it, the New York Yankees. The M’s tour next week and will take on the Yanks in the Bronx with Castillo most likely serving on Tuesday night.
Castillo is no stranger to pitching in New York. The right-hander dominated New York earlier this season while playing for the Reds. On July 14, Castillo played seven excellent innings, hitting eight Yankees hitters and allowing just one earned run.
Mariners fans should expect a similar performance from Luis Castillo next week as he takes on baseball’s best team. Seattle outbid New York at the close and they will see if their acquisition pays off. The Yanks will then take a trip west the following week, where the M’s will host three games at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park.
