Marilyn Mosby supporters vow to fight after federal charges, attorneys demand speedy trial – CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) – For the first time, Marilyn Mosby’s attorney A. Scott Bolden answered questions from reporters about her federal indictment. He said he wanted a speedy trial and promised a strong defense.

“Marilyn Mosby won’t be the only one on trial.” Bolden said. “The US Attorney’s Office will be on trial, the criminal justice system and its attacks on progressive prosecutors, Black women will be put on trial.”

Bolden defended Mosby’s withdrawal from her retirement account and said she knew nothing of a federal tax lien on her. Both were the basis for perjury charges and allegations that she made perjury in her mortgage applications.

Bolden’s supporters chanted “I stand with Marilyn Mosby” and took aim at the US Attorney’s Office for what he called a “politically motivated” prosecution.

Bolden counters allegations Mosby lied when withdrawing money from her 401k, falsely claiming she was eligible for coronavirus relief to avoid tax penalties. She used the money to buy two vacation homes in Florida.

He said Mosby has been impacted by covid because of her side businesses, including a travel agency, although Mosby herself had previously written that “I haven’t taken a single client for the companies yet.” hey, just like I haven’t received any money yet.”

“I’m telling you those businesses are up and running and they’re being pursued and they’re legally on the books,” Bolden said.

WJZ asked Bolden if he expected more charges and whether he was surprised by the current charges, given the government’s extensive investigation into the filing. Mosby’s finances. “What did the US attorney for Maryland say? What did he say? Is he surprised? Because I don’t run government. All I do is defend clients who are accused of doing bad things, and I emphasize being accused,” Bolden said.

Mosby’s attorney also criticized the prosecutor leading the case, Leo Wise, for making donations to her political opponents.

Cleverly prosecuted officers in the Gun Hunting Task Force and Mayor Catherine Pugh. “Negative native driver, he came not once but twice for her opponent four years ago and saw nothing wrong with that,” Bolden said.

The US attorney’s office was closed on Monday and was unavailable for comment. They generally do not comment on ongoing investigations.

Supporters at Monday’s event included Willie Flowers, the chair of the NAACP’s Maryland state convention, who said, “When the vote failed, they went after her family’s credibility.”

The event ended with a call for donations to Mosby’s legal defense fund.

Mosby State’s attorney has declared her innocence several times since being indicted. She spoke about the inquest at the church on Sunday and also in prepared remarks to reporters on Friday. The indictment was filed Thursday afternoon.
