A jury convicted a woman and her accomplices of first-degree murder for killing a chef for life insurance policies totaling $800,000, according to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office in California.

Maria Moore53 years old, said after the chef Dominic Sarkar56 years old, died claiming they had infrequent sex, but evidence suggests she would be the financial beneficiary should he pass away. Marvel Salvant49 years old, convicted of being the gunman who shot and killed the victim while the man was asleep.

Moore transferred Salvant $500 less than a month before the October 2018 murder, and they texted each other both before and shortly after the murder, prosecutors said. Cell phone evidence shows Salvant traveling from his workplace to Sarkar’s neighborhood. As seen on surveillance footage, he cordoned off the area and ended up parking his car a short distance from the victim’s home.

“A male then rode a bicycle to the victim’s residence from where Defendant Salvant’s vehicle was parked,” the prosecutors wrote. “Minutes after the murder, a similar man was seen on video footage of the vehicle. Cell phone location data subsequently showed Defendant Salvant left the area to return to his home in the Sacramento area. ”

Salvant told the others that he would soon make a lot of money and made it clear that he would do so through unnecessary means.

“I am a bad guy… I have committed a cardinal sin… I have already done it,” Salvant said, according to court documents obtained by the court. The East Bay Times. “So won’t come back from here.”

He may have done the dirty work, but Moore staged it all, according to authorities. Moore and Sarkar, a chef at The Passage of Indian restaurant in Mountain View City, purchased a life insurance policy for him. From prosecutors:

In April 2016, Mr. Sarkar and Defendant Moore purchased a $500,000 life insurance policy to insure Mr. Sarkar’s life. She was listed as his domestic partner, and his two daughters were listed as random beneficiaries.

A few months later, in September 2016, a beneficiary change was filed, removing Mr. Sarkar’s daughters from the policy and naming Moore’s son as a backup beneficiary. In 2017, Mr. Sarkar purchased another $300,000 policy to secure his life with his daughters listed as the sole beneficiaries. In January 2018, this policy was also changed, removing Mr. Sarkar’s daughters and designating Defendant Moore as the sole beneficiary.

Sentencing is set for March 9.
