CANTON (CBS) – A Mansfield woman has been arrested in connected with death of Boston Police John O’Keefe, who was found unresponsive outside a Canton home on Saturday morning.
Norfolk County District Attorney said Karen Read, 41, was charged with manslaughter, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash that resulted in death and homicide in a motor vehicle.
O’Keefe was found in the snow near a house on Fairview Road owned by people he knew. Investigators said Read drove to the area with O’Keefe early Saturday morning, possibly shortly after midnight.
After being discovered, O’Keefe was taken to Good Samaritan hospital, where he is presumed dead.
WBZ-TV I-Team sources say Read and O’Keefe were once romantically involved and that investigators got video of the incident from the Ring doorbell camera. According to sources, Read’s car was impounded.
O’Keefe is a 16-year veteran of the Boston Police Department.
“John was a kind-hearted man who was devoted to his family and will be greatly missed by his colleagues and anyone who had the privilege of meeting him,” Boston Police Superintendent Gregory Long said in a statement. “Today, the Massachusetts State Police and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office arrested the person responsible for John’s death.”
Reading is expected to be scheduled for Wednesday morning, where more details could be released.
“Additional narrative information may be on file during placement tomorrow,” said District Attorney Michael Morrissey. “Our thoughts are very much tonight about the people John has left behind.”
