Manny Machado calls out opposing teams in the absence of Albert Pujol’s farewell tour

San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado sounded at MLB teams that didn’t give Albert Pujols a farewell tour.

Albert Pujols made his return to the St. Louis Cardinals for the first time since 2011 this off-season. Although the reunion is truly special, Pujols revealed that he plans to retire at the end of the 2022 season.

Other stars have received farewell tours from opposing teams, such as the New York Yankees’ Derek Jeter and the Boston Red Sox’s David Ortiz. But tributes were few for Pujols, and San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado vented his frustration.

“Tell you what,” said Machado, h/t Derrick Good from the St. Louis mail delivery. “It’s kind of (bulls-t) that the teams aren’t giving him a farewell tour. I’ll tell you right away. Why? Albert was the best player of our generation that has ever played this game and to see him doing the things he does – I mean, it’s just amazing. It is very special that St. Louis has given him the opportunity to come back here and complete his career as a cardinal.”

Pujols made his mark when he debuted with St. Louis in 2001 and proved he was one of MLB’s top stars. He won three NL MVP Awards and six Silver Slugger Awards during his 11 seasons with the team and helped them win two Commissioner’s Trophies.

After his departure from the Los Angeles Angels earlier in the 2021 season, fans clamored for a return to the Cardinals. Despite this, he signed with the Dodgers to complete the campaign. But this offseason, he made it official by signing a one-year deal with the team that drafted him in the 13th round in 2000.

Machado just wanted to let it be known that Pujols absolutely deserves to be honored by teams facing St. Louis this season.
