Sen. Joe Manchin clapped back to reporters after President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address Tuesday night after being asked again about the fate of the White House’s “Build Back Better” legislative agenda.
Manchin, a moderate Democrat from West Virginia, made it known that there was no way to salvage this agenda, The Hill reported.
“You just can’t help it,” he said. “I don’t know where that came from.”
“Nothing has changed,” he said. “Maybe there are parts they want to talk about. I do not know. That was a bit far.”
Manchin also said he doubted Biden’s claims that more government spending would ease inflation.
“I never figured out that you can cut costs by spending more,” he said.
That prompted Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) to respond, “There’s no better way to put it.”
Manchin’s comments immediately raised serious doubts about Biden’s ability to revive his spending package, which stalled in December after months of negotiations.
Biden tried to appeal to Manchin, the only remaining vote in the Democratic caucus, arguing that his agenda will help offset the impact of rising prices by lowering costs for middle-class families.
In early February, CNN correspondent Manu Raju tweeted that Manchin explained The invoice is “dead” as it is.
“What Build Back Better Bill? I don’t know what you guys are talking about,” Raju reported, saying Manchin said when asked if he had had any conversations on the matter since December
“No no no no. It’s dead,” Manchin replied.
Conservative letter added:
Last week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer decided to proceed with a vote to end the filibuster to pass the Democratic election bill, and it failed.
Manchin and Arizona Democratic Senator Kyrsten Sinema voted against the nuclear bomb against the filibuster.
If the vote was intended to humiliate or pressure Manchin and Sinema, it was unsuccessful.
Manchin stood before the Senate and gave a fantastic speech declaring that ending the filibuster would tear the nation apart.
“I cannot support such a dangerous course for this nation when elected leaders are sent to Washington to unite our country, not divide our country,” the senator said.
“Let that change happen that way, and the Senate will be a body with no rules,” he said.
