Man fatally shot by police during firearms emergency in Kalgoorlie

A man was fatally shot by police on Friday in the mining town of Kalgoorlie, about 600 km east of Perth.
7NEWS understands police opened fire after the man attacked officers who ran into an alley near Whitlock Street around 12:15 p.m.
It was reported to emergency services that the man, in his 50s, was armed.

“This is a confirmed police shooting incident,” Washington police said in a statement Friday afternoon.
“Tragically, the man involved in the incident has died.
“The man’s family has been informed of the incident.”
The man was officially pronounced dead after being treated by paramedics and taken to Kalgoorlie Hospital.
Detectives have now been dispatched to Kalgoorlie to investigate.
Authorities said there was no ongoing threat to public safety.
“Due to the movement of emergency vehicles… we are asking the community to avoid the area,” police said.
The incident came just weeks after Terry Czernowski was fatally shot by his colleague in Kellerberrin, 200km east of Perth.
The gunman later turned the gun on himself after police negotiators tried to persuade him to surrender.
