The 36-year-old victim was walking along a busy street outside Woolworths in Darwin City at 11.30pm on Friday when he was allegedly stabbed in the stomach.
According to police, the victim was in a group while the alleged attacker was alone.
“I’m not sure of their history, but they certainly spoke to each other before,” Morrissey said.
The man was stabbed in the stomach area and emergency services were called.
He was rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition but died on Saturday afternoon.
The victim was from the Wadeye community but had lived in Darwin for some time.
The arrested man is being held at the Palmerston station house and is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday evening.
