Madison County School Districts Discuss Masking Duty at Meetings Tonight

MADISON COUNTY, Ill. – Two Illinois school districts plan to hold meetings to discuss their masking mandate on Monday.

Parents staged a “unmask our kids” protest on Friday. This prompted the Bethalto School District to cancel classes on Friday out of concern for student safety. The Bethalto School Board and the Collinsville School Board plan to hold a special meeting on Monday to discuss their masking mandate.

Governor JB Pritzker said in a press conference earlier this month that the plan to lift the statewide mask requirement on February 28 would go ahead if the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations continues to decline. Schools will not be included in that change. The governor and top doctors cite a study on the CDC website that explains how quickly the virus can spread among unvaccinated students sitting close together for hours at a time.

A Springfield, Illinois judge has ruled school districts must end their mask-wearing mandate. Students in Bethalto and Collinsville, sued by their parents, no longer have to wear masks, but others still do. The state of Illinois is appealing the judge’s decision.
