LL Cool J tells DJ Akademiks not to think “before you speak” that hip-hop artists are “dusty” and give nothing back to their community

Social media personality Akademiks has ruffled the feathers of several hip-hop pioneers and contributors after they reportedly called her “dusty” in a recent appearance on Twitch. Grammy Award Winner LL Cool J Earlier this week, he took to his social media, where he addressed Akademik’s comments without saying his name directly, sending a stern warning to the influencer to “think before you speak”.

“A DJ was basically saying that a lot of hip-hop pioneers are stuffed or how can they be the person who invented hip-hop if they don’t have a lot of money or if they’re not represented like they have a lot of money” , the rapper began. “Let me explain something to you: Don’t think just because someone knows how to get money – or doesn’t get money – that they haven’t contributed to the culture.”

Akademiks is known for praising and determining artist status based on online streams, chart positions and material possessions. However, LL explained that in the early days of hip hop, presenters didn’t have the resources and luxuries that rappers enjoy today.

LL emphasized that “no one is talking about Miles Davis’ bank account. We’re not talking about John Coltrane’s bank account. We’re not even talking about a lot of rock musicians… a lot of great country artists; we are not talking about their bank accounts.”

The veteran actor said, “This notion that you have to have money or you have no value is a bad idea and a misinformed way of looking at the world and the culture.”

He added, “Just because they didn’t get rich, just because they couldn’t amass millions or billions of dollars, doesn’t mean they didn’t contribute to that culture. They created an industry we’ve all eaten from. You’ve created an industry that you eat from. Think before you speak,” he concluded.

Fans on social media applauded the 54-year-old for his response, including one Instagram user who commented: “Well said FAM! Lay it down for those who truly deserve the crowns. These youngins would be nothing without the groundwork that you ALL have laid. Eat them up.”

Another added: “I’m not trying to explain anything to these new kids. We are old school, what is understood needs no explanation.”

Academics got wind of the legendary rapper’s comments and jumped back to Twitch to address it. “A lot of n-as grew up with you and all signed the same fd-up deal,” he said. “10-15 years later after you did it. What the hell have you done my n-”

He added: “It’s not that I don’t respect older artists. It’s just that I know when it comes to business, you haven’t done anything.”

LL’s comments come in light of the former Complex On Air personality’s recent comments, which read, “These are old rappers man. Have you seen one of those old rappers that say yo they’re the foundation of hip hop living real good? Said Akademiks during the live recording. “The N-gas look really dusty, I kid you not. And none of you guys are trying to get me because I don’t fuck with you guys either, so I’m just telling you the truth.”
