Liverpool break a crazy 82-year record with a 2-0 win over Porto

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool become the first team to score two or more goals in 16 consecutive games in all competitions in 82 years. The Reds have achieved Marvel after a 2-0 Champions League win over Porto. The last team to achieve this was Wolverhampton Wanderers after World War 2, while only one other team maintained a longer streak – Sunderland in 1927 with 17 games.
Liverpool started their historic 16-match streak in September this year after a 3-0 win over Leeds United. However, this streak has not been smooth, and scoring two or more goals in a match does not guarantee any team victory. Liverpool have faced a number of bumps in the road, such as their 2-2 draw with Manchester City, Draw 2-2 against Brighton and a 3-2 loss to West Ham United, all in the Premier League.
Speaking after the game, Jurgen Klopp admitted the difficulty of Porto’s recent match and admitted that his side could also lose this match. Via the Liverpool Echo:
“We could have lost this game, we gave away opportunities where they should have scored,” the Reds boss said. That can make the game difficult, we were lucky in this moment. We have times where we’re really not cool to deal with, it’s true. I didn’t expect that really tonight because we changed the decisive things, to be honest. ”
The win has given Liverpool five goals in the Champions League, and that means they maintain a 100 per cent record going into the final game of the group stage. Next, however, they face 13th-placed Southampton in the Premier League in hopes of extending their record to 17 consecutive games.
