Actor Adrian Dunbar, who played Superintendent Hastings in six seasons of Jed Mercurio’s hit BBC series Line of Duty, has speculated about a seventh season.
Dunbar told the Times of London: “There’s a huge appetite for more ‘Line of Duty’. It could be three or four episodes, I don’t think it’s going to be six for some reason. It could be two 90 minutes. But it’s all entirely up to Jed as to what the plot will be. It is a big request to him.”
The drama’s sixth season, which centers around a British police anti-corruption unit, ended with a big reveal that drew mixed reactions from audiences.
“It might not have been dramatically satisfying, and I can understand why people were like, ‘Oh my God!’ But it was a good ending to show that some of the biggest things that happen are, quite simply, an ordinary cop not giving out information because they’re told to, and that’s the only thing that makes a heist a success can lead,” Dunbar told the Times.
“No one knew what ‘Line of Duty’ would be. As you write the second series, you might be thinking, ‘This could go to three or four’ – but six?” Dunbar added. “And it’s very difficult to introduce a new character, a Mr. Big at the end of season six. They realize it has to be someone we’ve already seen – it can’t be someone out of the absolute nowhere. So it was a difficult place to be in.”
As for what could happen next season, Dunbar says: “It’s going to be really good. Maybe someone dies. Someone is being threatened. He doesn’t mind killing characters. Maybe he’ll kill us all. A terrible car accident if we rush to the scene? We have to leave that to him.”
When diversity When Mercurio asked about season 7 of Line of Duty and a second season of Bodyguard, he said, “There are no updates on that.”
Dunbar will next be seen in “Ridley,” where he leads the series as a retired police officer who becomes involved in an investigation. “Ridley” debuts August 28 on British broadcaster ITV.
