Lily-Rose Depp remains silent on Johnny Depp drama and slams claims of nepotism

Lily-Rose Depp said in a new Elle magazine profile that she avoided getting involved in the controversies surrounding her father, Johnny Depp, because she refuses to be defined by the men in her life. Johnny Depp spent several months in a court case against Amber Heard this year, during which testimony detailed his alleged abusive behavior towards Heard and his unprofessional conduct on film sets such as the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

“If it’s something that’s so private and so personal that all of a sudden it doesn’t feel so personal … I really feel entitled to have my secret garden of thoughts,” Lily-Rose Depp said of her silence to her Father. “I also think I’m not here to answer for anyone and I feel like throughout my career people have really wanted to define me through the men in my life, whether that’s my family members or my friends , What ever .”

“I’m really ready to define myself for the things I put out there,” she added.

Lily-Rose also addressed claims that she was a “nepo baby,” short for nepotism. She is the daughter of Johnny Depp and French star Vanessa Paradise and has been building an acting career since 2014, including in The King alongside Timothée Chalamet. In 2017, she was nominated for Most Promising Newcomer at the French César Awards. However, that hasn’t stopped the internet from claiming that Lily-Rose is only successful because of her famous parents.

“I know my stuff,” she said of the allegations. “The internet seems to care a lot about such things. People will have preconceived notions about you or how you got there and I can definitely say nothing will get you into the role other than being right for the role. The internet cares a lot more about who your family is than the people you cast in stuff. You might get your foot in the door, but you still have your foot in the door. After that comes a lot of work.”

Lily-Rose said she finds it “interesting” that “Nepo-Baby” allegations are made more against women than men in Hollywood, saying, “I just hear it a lot more about women and I don’t think it’s a coincidence is. She also said that such allegations did not carry the same weight in other professions.

“It’s weird for me to reduce someone to the idea that they’re only there because it’s a generational thing. It just doesn’t make sense,” Lily-Rose said. “If someone’s mother or father is a doctor and then the child becomes a doctor, you’re not going to say, ‘Well, you’re just a doctor because your parents are doctors.’ It’s like, ‘No, I went to medical school and got an education.’”

Lily-Rose stars alongside The Weeknd in the HBO series The Idol, created by Sam Levinson, creator of Euphoria. The show won’t be out until 2023, but it’s already one of HBO’s most anticipated new dramas. Lily-Rose Depp remains silent on Johnny Depp drama and slams claims of nepotism
