Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow perform “Industry Baby” at the Grammys

Lil Nas X took the stage at the 2022 Grammys, draped in glitter and supported by an entourage of dancers, to perform three of his “Montero” hits.

After an introduction by Trevor Noah, the veteran performer began his harrowing performance with “Dead Right Now,” backed by an array of drummers.

A series of big screens with the many controversial tweets sparked by the “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” music video led the rapper to his next song. Adorned in diamonds, Nas strapped down the track in front of a huge bust of his own head. Shortly thereafter Jack Harlow joined him onstage for a high-energy, marching band-inspired performance of their hit single “Industry Baby.”

Nas’ “Montero” and his breakout single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” are both nominated for three of the four major categories this year: Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year. The Tanu Muino-directed video for “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” was also nominated for Best Music Video.

With five nominations under her belt, Nas is the first Atlanta artist to be nominated in the major categories since Outkast. Nas won two Grammy Awards in 2020 for his career-launching viral hit “Old Town Road (Remix)” starring Billy Ray Cyrus.

The young superstar’s rebellious and uncompromising personality has inspired many, with icons such as Elton John calling him a “brave and bold provocateur”. His Industry Baby counterpart, Harlow, narrated diversity in an interview: “I think the community he represents could use someone who’s successful at a mainstream level — where it can feel like, ‘Yo, you can be number 1. You can be the greatest.’ I really appreciate what he does and I admire him. I admired him long before we met.”
